Chapter Forty-Two

Wexler sat in the back office of the car wash, watching a small black and white closed-circuit security monitor. There was no sound, but he didn’t need to hear what was said. He recognized the man on screen. Jake Noble had been responsible for sinking the Maersk Minerva off the coast of Rijeka, nearly bankrupting the Old Man. Wexler watched the silent interaction, then leaned back in the cheap metal folding chair and rubbed his chin with his fingertips in thought. Sorting out Noble for the Old Man would be icing on the cake, but only if he could resurrect the operation in Cuba. The girl was the key. She was no field operative. Wexler knew that just by looking. He brought out his cellphone and used a weather app to check on the storm. A category two hurricane was barreling up through the tropics on a collision course with the islands. That complicated things.

On screen, Noble and his girlfriend walked to a hotrod and peeled out of the parking lot with a shriek of rubber that Wexler heard through the cinderblock walls. A moment later Bekir appeared in the office. He closed the door and put his back against it.

“He claims to be a German with girls to sell.”

Wexler snorted. “He’s a professional liar.”

“His accent is pretty convincing.”

“Of course it is,” Wexler said. “They don’t send dullards into the field.”

“What are we going to do about him?”

Wexler used the controls to roll the video back and watched the interaction again while he considered that question. As Noble and the girl were walking out to the car for the second time, he said, “Noble has to die but I need the girl alive.”

“I’m uncomfortable killing American intelligence agents,” Bekir said. “Kill a million whores if you want and nobody even knows they’re gone. Kill one CIA officer and you’ll have the United States government hounding your every step.”

“You’ll be paid,” Wexler said. “Handsomely.”

“This isn’t about money,” said Bekir. “The CIA is involved now and I want no part of it. If they connect Lukyanenko’s disappearance to my organization, they’ll ruin me.”

Wexler grinned. “In a few short days the CIA will have much bigger things to worry about. They won’t have the time or ability to hassle you.”

“Lukyanenko’s little toy?” Bekir guessed.

Wexler nodded.

“You promised me it would not be used in Ukraine,” Bekir said. “I do business here.”

“And I’m a man of my word,” Wexler said. “How did you leave it with Noble?”

“He’ll be back in a few hours,” Bekir said. “He’s expecting a meeting with you.”

“Then we’d best not disappoint,” Wexler said. “Arrange a welcoming committee and leave nothing to chance. This bloke is not one to mess around with.”
